Navigating Breastfeeding Challenges: 3 Key Steps Towards Success

Breastfeeding can be a deeply rewarding experience, but for many families, it’s not always smooth sailing. From latch issues to milk supply concerns, there are challenges that can make the journey feel overwhelming. The good news? You don’t have to navigate this alone, and with the right support, many issues can be resolved. Here are three essential things to keep in mind if you’re struggling with breastfeeding:

  1. Feed the baby

  2. Protect the milk supply

  3. Seek professional help

Let’s dive into each of these points!

1. Feed the Baby

Above all else, the priority is ensuring your baby is nourished. If breastfeeding isn’t going as planned, supplementation might be necessary. This could include pumped breast milk, donor milk, or formula. Remember, this doesn’t have to be a permanent solution. By identifying the root cause, whether it’s a latch issue or a supply concern, you can work toward getting back on track. Often times, when a baby is not able to feed well at the breast and get enough nutrients, it can become worse due to their lack of energy. Breaking that cycle, by increasing their intake through supplementation, can be really helpful.

2. Protect Your Milk Supply

If supplementation is part of your plan, it’s important to maintain your milk supply through regular pumping. Breastfeeding works on a supply-and-demand basis, so the more your body is stimulated to produce milk, the better. Also, if a baby hasn’t been removing milk well, this can lead to a decrease in milk supply. By incorporating pumping sessions, you can help boost your supply and/or ensure that your supply doesn’t decrease while addressing the temporary challenges.

3. Seek Professional Support

Breastfeeding difficulties can feel isolating, but you don’t have to face them alone. If you’re experiencing latch issues, pain, or concerns about supply, reaching out to an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)- who are the gold standard for managing a wide range of breastfeeding issues. They can help you identify the problem, explore solutions, and create a long-term feeding plan that works for your family.

A Note on Triple Feeding

For those who are “triple feeding” (breastfeeding, pumping, and supplementing), it’s important to know that this should only be a temporary solution. It’s exhausting and unsustainable in the long run, which is why seeking professional guidance is crucial. Together with a lactation consultant, you can work toward simplifying your routine and resolving underlying issues.

Breastfeeding isn’t always easy, but with patience, support, and resources, many challenges can be overcome. Whether your journey involves exclusive breastfeeding, combination feeding, or a different approach altogether. Remember that what works best for your family- is what is best. Period.
